Oblivion’s design and formal language has a big, shining example: that’s Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001 - A Space Odyssey’. But we’re not facing a friendly alien power in Oblivion, it’s absolutely evil, and so Oblivion’s design elements became evil counterparts of their originals. The drones: the evil brothers of the pods in 2001’s spacecraft. Discovering the aliens in 2001 meant a big leap for mankind, in Oblivion it’s a total disaster. The very last take in 2001 is showing the Star Child, a transformed human being, while the ‘embryo’ shown during Jack’s travel into the alien mothership is a symbol of men’s oppression. Design is everything in Oblivon, but despite its elegance and transparency, it’s a design of demise and unfreedom.
