Oblivion’s design and formal language has a big, shining example: that’s Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001 - A Space Odyssey’. But we’re not facing a friendly alien power in Oblivion, it’s absolutely evil, and so Oblivion’s design elements became evil counterparts of their originals. The drones: the evil brothers of the pods in 2001’s spacecraft. Discovering the aliens in 2001 meant a big leap for mankind, in Oblivion it’s a total disaster. The very last take in 2001 is showing the Star Child, a transformed human being, while the ‘embryo’ shown during Jack’s travel into the alien mothership is a symbol of men’s oppression. Design is everything in Oblivon, but despite its elegance and transparency, it’s a design of demise and unfreedom.

The only disturbing factor in this seemingly perfect world is comprised of enigmatic resistance fighters that are endangering mankind’s rescue mission and the total breakdown of Earth’s natural ressources.
We (and also Jack) are left in the dark about their identity for a long time until Jack’s kidnapped by them. This encounter is rocking Jack’s view of the world: in a both direct and figurative sense this encounter is the beginning of Jack’s humanization as a man.
More about this next time! See you again, soon!
